RYAN THE OPERATOR
This keyboardist, producer, singer and musical director has been performing in the Bay Area and all over the world for more than 20 years. Mainly a touring musician, he is the go to keyboardist for countless international Reggae artists as well as Grammy winning acts such as Michael Rose, Junior Reid formerly of Black Uhuru, and Marcia Griffiths formerly of Bob Marley and the Wailers (see below for partial list of artists).
Nicknamed the ‘operator ‘ for his headset mic wearing while he plays, this virtuoso is known for his incredible keyboard technique being able to play as much as six parts simultaneously. He is the pioneer on the one hand reggae shuffle and bang technique which was previously considered impossible and has never been equalled.
When not on tour, he can be seen playing all over the Bay Area at venues such as Slims, Ashkenaz, The Warfield, 19 Broadway, Moe’s Alley, The Catalyst, Reggae on the River, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Bill Graham Civic Center, Monterrey Reggae Festival, and many many more.
MANAS ITENE [of Spearhead]
Manas Itene was born in the town of Ughelli, Delta state, in the West African country of Nigeria, where he grew up as a member of the Isoko tribe.
He played drums with several local church groups, where he was discovered by the Mandators, one of Nigeria’s most successful reggae groups.
As a teenager, he moved to Lagos to play and tour with the Mandators, and also sat in with many other famous Nigerian artists, including Sonny Okosuns and Majek Fashek.
In 1993, the Mandators toured to the U.S., where Manas has remained ever since.
He has played with 3-time Bammy Award winner Inka Inka, Sister Carol of Jamaica, Apple Gabriel of Israel Vibration, Sugar Minott, and Kotoja, to name a few. He also has spent a lot of time in the recording studio, recording with such artists as Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship and Babatunde Olatunji.
Manas has enjoyed the opportunity to draw upon his diverse musical influences since joining Spearhead ten years ago.
DJ BULBY YORK
DJ, Engineer & Producer Collin ‘Bulby’ York began visiting recording studios at the age of 14. Spending time in legendary Jamiacan producer King Tubby’s studio sparked his interest in music production almost immediately. When King Tubby passed away, York transferred to Mixing Lab studios to take on work as an intern and began work with other notable producers including Winston Riley, Sly and Robbie, Steely and Clevie, Roy Francis, Donovan Germaine and others.
York began his own production career in 1992 when his uncle started an up and coming label called C&G Music. A year later, he teamed with Lynford ‘Fatta’ Marshall and launched his own Fat Eyes label which produced a number of hit songs including Want You Back by Singing Melody, Memories by Beenie Man, Stuckie (Bounty Killer), In or Out (Capleton), Jah Works (Terror Fabulous), Video Light (Mr Lexx and Mr Vegas), and Put Down Your Weapon by Capleton and Yami Bolo.
York also worked with punk/ska band No Doubt on their platinum-selling Rocksteady album which was recorded in Jamaica in 2001.
He’s worked in studios and the live stage all around the world, both as a performer and an engineer and producer for artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Shabba Ranks, Jimmy Cliff, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Madonna, Michael Franti, UB40, Sinead O’Connor, Sly and Robbie and many, many more.
